Avivo purchases apartment buildings to preserve family recovery housing

Avivo has purchased two multi-family apartment buildings to preserve recovery housing for the families and individuals in its intensive outpatient treatment programs. When the owner decided to sell this summer, Avivo was at risk of losing the apartment homes to market rate housing.

“Housing stability improves treatment success for our participants,” shares Avivo President & CEO Kelly Matter.

Safe, stable housing is critical to participants’ success in completing treatment, and nearly all of Avivo’s treatment participants experience homelessness prior to treatment. “Housing stability improves treatment success for our participants,” shares Avivo President & CEO Kelly Matter.

Since 2011, Avivo has rented two apartment buildings near Chicago Avenue. The buildings provide 20 apartment homes for Avivo’s recovery participants. An average of 120 individuals live in these apartments each year as they participate in treatment and recovery support.

“Rent was also going up every year,” shares Matter. “It makes more sense to invest in owning and upgrading them as assets, not only for who we serve, but for our surrounding community.”

Avivo plans to renovate the units and convert them into family recovery housing. “We have a significant demand for treatment and recovery services for women with children,” shares Matter. “We offer the only program in the state where children, infant to age 17, can live with their mothers while they are in treatment.” Avivo serves 85 mothers and their children each year in family intensive outpatient treatment.
